Wood Accent Pieces

Rough Sawn Western Red Cedar Corbel

Buildings with Heavy Timber Trusses and Loose Timbers often contain other common timber accent pieces such as Corbels, Rafter Tails, Wooden Brackets and similar components.

Corbels are fabricated for the following applications:

  • Placement Under Truss Ends
  • Accent Pieces Under Truss Centers
  • Column-to-Horizontal Beam Connections
  • Timber Mantel and Shelf Mounts
  • Attachment Below Interior or Exterior Building Overhang Features

Like Heavy Timber Trusses, Corbels are always Decorative and sometimes Structural. Corbels are often attached with some type of concealed fastener arrangement.

Rafter Tails are fabricated from a variety of wood species. Thicknesses and lengths vary according to customer preference. End profiles can be chosen from one of our established designs or patterned after the customer’s plans. These make outstanding exterior accents below the eaves of any structure, and can be sized to match interior trusses or rafters to create the appearance of a member projecting through the wall. End profiles can vary from simple bevels or radii, to elaborate scroll cuts. Rafter Tails are most often sized with an extra 2-4 feet of length for attachment inside a wall or attic to other building structure. Note that Heavy Timber Trusses can also be provided with integral Rafter Tails to extend through walls and support overhangs.

Heavy Timber Brackets, typically in the form of a diagonal support member extending from a column or wall to a horizontal beam, such as the bottom chord of a truss or lateral support beam are also supplied by SWC. Like Corbels and Rafter Tails, these can be supplied in a variety of sizes and profiles, constrained only by the size of available timbers. Heavy Timber Brackets are frequently sized with a thickness matching the columns or beams to which they are attached. The brackets are sometimes purely decorative, but many times also provide lateral structural support to a perpendicular joint of some type. Counter-sunk lag screws are typically utilized to attach the Heavy Timber Brackets. Click here to view a Wood Bracket template drawing.
