Douglas Fir Timbers with Time-worn Finish
For this project, we worked with one of Houston's premier architects and custom home builders. In 2009, Structural Wood Components was tasked by the client with crafting some unique, medieval style trusses plus accompanying ridge beams and rafters for a major remodel job in the Memorial area of Houston. Detailed plans were provided by the customer.
The truss design called for:
• Intricate Scroll Cut Members
• Concealed Fasteners
• Blacksmith Style Steel Straps
• Beam Edges Dressed with Draw-knife for Hand-made Appearance
• A Timeworn Finish Applied to New Douglas Fir Material
All components of the trusses were first cut from new Douglas Fir timbers in accordance with plans. The edges of all members were then dressed carefully with a draw knife to create a handcrafted look. Truss components and loose beams were then processed to add relief to the wood grain and create a time worn appearance. Ridge Beams and Rafters were then shipped to the job site for installation while truss components were moved to final drilling and assembly. Decorative steel straps were fabricated and hammer-finished in our shop, then attached to the trusses. Provisions were made in the trusses for concealed wiring and light fixture attachment. After delivery to the job site and application of a professional finish by the builder, the result was beautiful, antique style trusses significantly enhancing the Great Room of the residence.
This customer prides themselves in client satisfaction and high quality work, goals Structural Wood Components also aspires to. As a result, it was our pleasure to be a part of the team when called for this project.
